As a middle aged, neurodivergent (AuDHD), working wife and mom, while I truly enjoy cooking as a pursuit, I don't always have a lot of energy or time. I would still like to eat an exciting, varied array of foods. If that resonates, but you're not sure where to begin, I hope to bridge the gap where I can, with recipes written in a "new way" - with my fellow NDs in mind. Recipes don't always seem to be formatted in a way that makes sense to me, and maybe you've found that too. I am aiming to recognize different abilities (and disabilities).
I am against the folly of deluded New Years Resolutions, but if I were to make any, this year I hope to help folks find enjoyment and confidence in the kitchen with this site. As I build up my catalog of recipes, tips and tricks, and products I personally use and find helpful, I aim to blend food ideas that take little effort, and also some more elaborate recipes to challenge you. You've probably heard of "spoon theory" - I'm piggybacking on that and referring to different levels of required task related executive function as "peppers." Cooking takes various levels of effort that matter when your "peppers" are low.
As far as my personal journey goes (feel free to stop here if you're a TLDR type of person), when I initially started this site in January of 2024, I was operating fresh off of yet another "first meeting high" of Weight Watchers. Searching for recipe options for their newest system failed me online, and as an intermediate home cook, that frustrated me. I joined a few social media groups for inspiration, but found outdated links, wrong points values, boring food, and people arguing over the tiniest details (of course, welcome to social media).
This year, in 2025, I have different goals. I have turned to food for emotional support since I was 13 years old. In 2023, after five years of pursuing intuitive eating, I got really (obsessively) into my step counter, and decided to dip my toe back into the world of tracking and calorie counting. I promptly fell back into eating disorder territory, and the misery cycle of restriction and bingeing. As a last ditch effort, I was sure that Weight Watchers would save me, and I could stay grounded, but spoiler alert: it didn't... I didn't. By September of 2024, I found myself in a deep depression, my relationship with food worse than ever, and my binges out of control.
I have decided to repurpose this blog. No more "neWWayrecipes" - I am ushering in "new way recipes." I am dedicated to finding a "new way" of walking through life with food and movement this year - I am dedicated to the pursuit of peace in all areas of life. I aim to share what I've learned along the way, to vent frustrations, and to be honest and real. Along that vein, I have removed all points value and diet language. For my own mental health, which I must prioritize, I will not be adding any nutritional values; if you need that information, you'll need to do the math.
Spoiler alert: I am a Christian, and a personal part of my food journey this year will be learning to include God in my choices. My personal journey entries will incorporate my faith; to keep everyone comfortable, my recipes, product review, tips and hack posts will not. I have to be me, but I want everyone to feel welcome as well. If you aren't currently a Christian, I invite you to read those sorts of entries with an open mind. Finding openly ND folk who are willing to admit any sort of religiosity is not common; perhaps the perspectives may be intriguing from an athropological standpoing at the very least!
Cheers, blessings and hopes for a great year! - Christina
